"INFLUENCES: SPANNING THE TWENTIETH CENTURY"
Suite for Flute, Clarinet and Piano by Alec Wilder
Program Notes: Alec Wilder impresses with his Suite for Flute, Clarinet and Piano. High points are the offbeat jazzy, Scherzo-like second movement and the beautiful minimalistic slow movement. This work will offer the audience an enjoyable and adventurous listening experience.
Ballade, Pastorale and Dance for Flute, Horn and Piano by Eric Ewazen
Program Notes: Ballade, Pastorale and Dance was composed in the winter of 1992-1993. The combination of flute, horn and piano produces a chamber music ensemble with wonderful possibilities in terms of contrasting colors and textures, resulting in a kaliedoscopic world of alternating moods and dynamics. The first movement begins ominously and mysteriously, but quickly turns frenetic and wild with spinning flute flourishes, percussive horn gestures, and dramatic piano chords. The second movement, composed during the winter holidays, has a gentle impressionistic feel. Long, beautiful and personal songs are sung by both the horn and flute. The final movement, with its lively dance rhythms, brings the piece to an exhilarating conclusion.
Mr. Mouse Dances and Dies for E-Flat Clarinet and Piano by Daniel Dorff
Program Notes: While thinking about how to create a work uniquely in the spirit of the Eb clarinet, Dorff happened to see a magazine ad for a new line of Sony home stereo amplifiers claiming their control knobs glide so smoothly that a mouse could turn them. The ad had a photo of an adorable mouse standing up using the stereo. At the same time, he had been thinking that the squeaky and melodramatic use of Eb clarinet in Till Eulenspiegel was also a fun model to parody for the Eb clarinet as protagonist. These two ideas quickly fused, bearing a programmatic excuse to write a recital piece with strong influence from Led Zeppelin and Chuck Berry (quite taboo for academically-trained composers back in 1981), about a mouse who goes to a dance party, dances up a storm with various girl mice, until he finally keels over fatally, gently ascending to heaven in the coda. Dorff also hoped this could later be animated in the brilliantly surreal style of Max and Dave Fleischer's cartoons of the 1930s.
Jugend for Flute, Clarinet, Horn and Piano by Sigfrid Karg-Elert
Program Notes: Karg-Elert's Jugend (Youth) is scored for flute, clarinet, horn, and piano. Composed in 1919, Jugend is a gorgeous piece of music, made that way in part by its instrumentation, and also by the addition of rich melodic textures. This work consists of one 21-minute movement divided into several sections. The music is a mixture of post-Brahmsian romanticism with contemporary French developments. This striking combination presents a great dreamy quality making it a wonderfully evocative piece.
